I’m going to celebrate the terribly heroic Neville’s birthday by imagining him having sex with Ginny all through Eighth Year. And by reccing
Theft of Assets, Destruction of Property.
If you have any sort of interest in Neville/Draco – if you can vaguely imagine them working – then READ IT. It has an abusive Lucius, which is not a characterisation I find it easy to get my head round. But I love it even so. Neville and Draco have a fling, before Draco gets 'ill' - losing his energy and his magic – and is pulled out of Hogwarts. When it turns out two years later that Draco is not a virgin, and therefore cannot be married off to the man Lucius chose for him, Lucius sues Neville for the titular crimes. Neville marries Draco as part of a settlement.
So far, so emo. But none of this – or even Draco’s magical problems – is really the point of the fic. The bulk of it is taken up by Draco and Neville’s tense, awkward marriage and the negotiations they try to make to live together, even as they don’t understand each other at all.
I already knew of
helenish’s outstanding talent for dialogue, and this fic showcases it brilliantly. Draco and Neville’s contrasting, clashing voices – and Draco’s anxiety and inability to work out what Neville wants – are wonderfully done.
Draco learns to cook and clean, and the progress he makes is interspersed with scenes with Neville (and Ron, Harry and Hermione). The fic that comes out of this gives a very authentic sense of time passing and a domestic life together, while being
fucking heartbreaking. Draco can’t understand that Neville can think he has worth or care for him after everything. The urge to hug him and feed him soup is immense, poor darling. And NEVILLE. Neville is so resigned to a loveless marriage and trying just as hard as Draco to make things work and clearly beating himself up after every mistake, because he sees Draco’s painful vulnerability but he can’t quite see how or why he’s hurting him.
And they have sex, during which Neville is very careful and kisses Draco and stays in the bed afterwards and the painful politeness between them while Draco is just BREAKING you guys, omg.
