Immortality

I think the idea of the Headmaster of a school being the only one feared by a villain seeking immortality is fantastic, because children remind us of our mortality. “Dumbledore’s army” of growing children defeating ‘Voldemort’ is great conceptually, as is the idea that Voldemort’s follower chose her child over him, and that’s what took him down. The same thing goes for Lily: Voldemort believed his mother could not have had magic, because she died. Seeking to kill a child who would defeat him, he was destroyed by another mother’s death for her child. Despite my discomfort with some of the Mother Love idealism in HP, the stuff about parenthood as a kind of immortality, about the instinct to protect your child overcoming greed or fear, about children being the next generation who will replace you and that’s okay... Sometimes HP gives good meta.

Possibly I am just justifying why I wrote mpreg. I have no particular problem with mpreg, I’ve read it on occasion, and my discomfort with Let All The Characters Be Men, No Ladies Here Please isn’t something inherent or limited to mpreg. But I’ve only written it once before, and that was for the lulz.

Author’s Notes: This was written for the forever challenge at dracoharry100. It can be split cleanly into two drabbles, but it works better without the split.


“I never thought I’d live this long. Never thought I’d get to have this.” Harry was warm, under the duvet with Draco pressed close, the three of them sharing body heat.

“Me neither,” Draco replied, memory clouding his eyes. “By the end... it seemed like he really would live forever.”

“I know.” Harry felt a chill at the thought, but the smell of baby musk and Draco’s hair chased it away. He felt a pang of sympathy for Tom, who’d grown up alone and lived that way forever. “It’s so... you can’t be immortal and human, in the end. I know he didn’t care, but Voldemort gave up so much. Being part of humanity, love and family... having children.”

“My father always wanted immortality,” Draco said, his voice still soft. He nestled in further, his pointy nose digging into Harry’s neck. “The human way – through having his name remembered. Glory, a place in the history books, a statue in the Ministry. And you got them instead.”

“But he forgives me, right?”

“As of three days ago he does – you helped make his other bid for immortality happen. The family living on.”

Draco murmured agreement, his eyes never leaving their daughter.

Aww, thanks! You're right - there were references to actual mpreg happening but they got cut when I was fixing the wordcount.

Yeah, HP has great meta about different kinds of love. I always find it a little funny how JKR ranks motherly love above fatherly... all the fathers in the books, except Arthur, have some issues :)

And that was one lovely scene between Harry and Draco ♥. Awwww-inducing but not too sugary ♥

Yeah. I think sometimes the messages about love come out skewed, but there's interesting stuff to be seen. And I KNOW RIGHT. Poor fathers. Poor mothers, too - they're martyrs so often! I love Narcissa for being an awesome mum YET SURVIVING.
