Merlin 212: The Fires of Idirsholas

LOL, gotta love Emilia Fox. She’s clearly having fun with her evil-eyelinered, evil-gibberish-speaking character.
Morgana and Morgause are SO FEMMESLASHY, OMG.
More Gwen = yay! Gwen feeling unwell = boo!
FIGHT SCENE!
The knights were genuinely creepy, but for a lot of that all I could think was I SAW THIS IN A FIC ONCE. You know, Arthur fighting and telling Merlin to run, Arthur’s in trouble, Merlin yells a spell right by his ear to save them...
Only this time Arthur somehow didn’t notice. ??? Oh well, they had all the “your first battle wound!” stuff, that wasn’t bad. The Greeks, you know, they thought lovers made the best soldiers, etc.
Hey, check out Morgana’s eyeliner! Big sister’s influence, one assumes. I actually really felt for her here; it must’ve been terrifying to find everyone falling asleep around her.
Does Arthur have a hearing problem? Why is Merlin talking magic stuff with Arthur like SIX FEET AWAY?
I am feeling sorry for Morgana again! I am a fickle creature, I know. But ahahahaha Arthur how are you buying this shit?
I actually think it’s a mistake for the writers to play up Merlin and Morgana’s lying!fail. It’s meant to be a tense scene, so all three of them should be more competent. Particularly since this is all quite divided-loyalties on Merlin’s part: he’s lying to Arthur for Morgana, who he knows betrayed them; but he never told her about his magic, even when he had the choice, and so left her feeling alone.
LOL STOP HOLDING THE SWORD BY THE BLADE, MORGANA, IT REALLY EMPHASISES THE PLASTIC NATURE OF SAID BLADE. Liking the moment of “ooh options...” though.
Eesh. Sleeping sickness: really creepy disease!
LOL COMEDY SLEEPING UTHER. LOVE IT.
MERLIN: We could disguise Uther!
ARTHUR: That might work.
MERLIN: We could dress him as a woman!
ARTHUR: I might have looked good, but that was just a one-off favour and I don’t think -
MERLIN: A servant?
The knights are creepy, but the breathing-groaning thing isn’t really working. It’s kinda sub-Vader. Plus it reminds me of the tiger!cave of wonders from Aladdin - it’s the noise it makes right before WHO DISTURBS MY SLUMBER?
Morgause! >.< BAD SISTER. I assumed she was defending Morgana from the disease!
The snake and skull on the bottle of hemlock was adorable. Never change, Merlin, never change.
Morgana: UNABLE TO STAND AND RUN AT PLOT-CONVENIENT MOMENTS SINCE 2008. Loved Merlin leaving her, though, that was a v cool character moment. I’m loving Arthur’s unwavering focus on Uther, too. It’s not just love - he left Gwen, after all - it’s that Uther is king, Uther is Camelot. I really like how Arthur pretty much unwaveringly buys into the programme’s version of medieval mores and believes in the law.
MERLIN: *slaps Arthur*
ARTHUR: SUCH a spanking if we live, Merlin!
OH ARTHUR. HEROIC MUSIC PLAYING, STRAINED BANTER FLYING, GO FOR IT!
Honestly Merlin. Give her the heroic option: tell her what it is.
WOWZERS. Love it. Especially Merlin v. Morgause; Morgana was the victim here, whatever Gaius says about her “not choosing to use her gift for good”, and it shows.
OH MERLIN. BAD DECISION. CLEARLY A BAD DECISION. But I suppose since you tricked Morgana into drinking poison you felt something honourable was called for.
I loved this episode to PIECES. Claustrophobic and awesome! Only more Gwen could’ve improved it.
