To be honest, I don't think it was an incorrect usage. Word use is fluid, particularly on the internet. I consider 'fandom' to be a word for fandoms in general, the phenomenon of what we do itself. I don't really understand what other word you'd have me use.
I know there's a tendency, particularly among Harry Potter fen, to think of their own fandom and fandom in general as the same thing. But that wasn't how I meant it, and I'd hoped the post made that clear: fandom in general was under attack, and I'd have given a vote to someone from any fandom who'd been around as long as she has - although likely not my first one unless they had other things to reccommend them, as legomymalfoy does.
