A rant about the results of the European elections, in which member nations of the EU elect their representatives in the European Parliament. If one of you guys reads this and needs explanations, I'll happily give them. But I won't be offended if nobody does; I just felt the need to rant about the results, and the state of British politics generally, and the fact that in a few years David Cameron will be my country's leader.

Ugh. This was depressing in just about every way. We’re sending two BNP (British National Party – they’re neo-Nazis) members to the European Parliament, which makes me squirm with embarrassment. Bloody Sarko’s party did well, so he gets to be all vindicated even though half of France despises him. Centre-left parties all over Europe did badly – I’m a lefty myself, so I’m not happy. Particularly since this seems to have been partly because it was largely the working and lower middle classes that didn’t vote out of apathy or disgust. Four of Belgium’s twenty-fives seats have gone to their Anti-Islamic League or whatever the fuck it’s called. That unbelievable twat (one day I’m going to post about all the ways in which he’s a shit) Berlusconi’s party got 35% – less than he predicted, ha, but still Prodi lost out. Angela Merkel, who’s centre-right and about the only European politician who’s a real stateswoman, also did well. Which I’m not bothered about: I subscribe to the ideal of respecting the politician while disagreeing with their politics, and Merkel is about the only one where that ideal actually comes true. She’s not even very right-wing.

British politics are so sordid at the moment. Brown needs to go, immediately. It’s already clear that the Tories will win the next election. :( This is bad. I mean, the Tube strike right now shows what happens when populist Tories who pretend to have come over all green are given responsibility. Chaos, disaster, international embarrassment (I’m going to pretend I’m Australian during the Olympics) and the idiot falling into a river.

Now, after the next election I have hope for the Lib Dems becoming the second party. That could actually move us towards progress; it might even work better in the long run for progressives, because they have excellent policy and there’s far more difference between the Lib Dems and the Tories than the Tories and Labour. The Lib Dems came second in the local elections, 5% above Labour, so... *crosses fingers* In the end, though, David bloody Cameron is our next Prime Minister, and our chance for a Home Secretary who’s not into rampantly destroying civil liberties walked out so he could be melodramatic.

And then there’s the recession. Jesus fuck. We’re really in some black times.
