I love love love public healthcare here in Canada. If anything, I'd rather pay more taxes and have it cover more things - they've stripped away a few things recently (notably, eyecare) and it sucks pretty hard. EVERYONE has the right to healthcare ALWAYS. Our system is flawed too, but I'd take it everyday.
And I agree with your comments about how it becomes part of a national identity. It's a broader statement about what you value, imo.
