Writer's Block: Stories of old

[Error: unknown template qotd]

I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count :)

Loki is my favourite god. He's the Norse god of mischief, as well as being associated with fire, cunning, shapeshifting and air. He features in a lot of literature, though not as much as I'd like; he always brings fun and conflict and life. Luke, in Eight Days of Luke, with his gleeful arson and his sacrifice for David and his charm and his terror of his divine family, is my favourite version.

Loki is half-giant (in most versions). In Norse mythology the gods are at constant war with the giants; it's an ongoing, endless battle against an inherently vicious foe. But Loki comes to Asgard, to Odin, and says: I'm here. I want to be one of you. I am half-god, too: you should not deny me. And Odin, who gave up one eye for wisdom, drinks with him and mixes blood with him. Odin is sometimes portrayed as a semi-father figure for Loki, because Odin commands him; but more often they are semi-comrades bound to each other by oath.

This got a little longer than I anticipated )

Writer's Block: Do (political) opposites attract?

[Error: unknown template qotd]

Very interesting question. ‘Respect’ and ‘trust’ are fairly strong words; I can do both of those things irrespective of my political beliefs. I can’t admire people with certain views, at least not the way I do people without them.

I’m strongly against capital punishment, but it doesn’t colour my opinion of people if they disagree (although in Britain that’s unusual). I think they’re wrong, but I see it as people seeing the world differently, and that’s better than fine.

On abortion things are slightly different. )

Limericks ftw!

EXAMS ARE OVER! GLEE!

The Concepts in Literary Study exam was the worst I’ve ever taken bar none, but at least it’s over. And I went with the Lesbifriends (I know, we have a pun problem) to the Creative Writing Society Open Mic Night (catchy name) last night. It was awesome. Especially since my friend Violet read some of her poetry and did it brilliantly. They were so funny and effective; I’m still thinking about them now. She’s putting together a collection and it will be brilliant, if the poems we heard are any indication.

*grins* I love writer friends. She’s gonna be published soon, I’m sure. Although the poems are more effective read out – maybe she’s the next Taylor Mali? Only, you know, a girl.

Speaking of poetry... it’s Limerick Day! (Thank goodness, because unlike Violet I can't do freeverse.) So here we go.

The American public’s been getting hateful,
Over maggots and rat hairs – a plateful!
But the FDA’s tricky,
They say it’s just icky,
So suck up your flies and be grateful!

*smirks* Sorry, guys. I just read an article about all the stuff that can go into food before it’s considered contaminated in the US. To make up for this, have something porny.
