Grime

Title: Grime
Word count: 100
Characters/pairings: Ron/Draco unrequited
Rating: G
Summary: “Obsession. It had a perverse grandeur.”
Warnings: angst
Disclaimer: The boys and girls belong to JKR, even though I’m often much nicer to them than she is.
Author’s Notes: This was written for the old broken prompt at [profile] rondracodrabble.

Obsession.

It had a perverse grandeur. There was glamour inherent in the term, in the idea of that state of bright, raw eyes and a mind twisted and broken round one concept like barbed wire twisted round a fence. Yet obsession was ultimately a tawdry emotion. It was pathetic, to be obsessed with anything, unless it was a person who was obsessed back. And to be obsessed with someone who had no real capacity for obsession, and who bestowed what little he had on another – it was degrading.

Draco felt himself sinking willingly into grime every time he followed him.

Oh, wow... That's a wonderfuly essay on obsession. I do love obsession and I have a thing for unrequited love and Draco is the perfect vessel to combine those two things.

Oh, and thanks. I've learned a new word. :D

:DD Thank you! I quite agree. Draco is canonically so obsessive - almost as much as Harry, bless him - and it's so great for fic!

Heh. 'Tawdry'? It's my best guess...

OMG! Yes, it's 'tawdry', now please get out of my head and never tell my English teacher how I learn new vocabulary. :D

This is one of my favourite things. A perfect 100 word drabble with beautiful flowing words which vividly tell a story of real emotional conflict. I've read it several times, and I'm appreciating it more and more.

Much, much love for this. ♥ ♥

Ooh, lovely. I love the way you juxtapose the beauty with the filth. I feel you write like a sculptor.

A very powerful commentary on obsession and what it does to us.
The fact that this is exactly 100 words is something to marvel at. I don't feel it needs any more or any less to make it perfect and it tells us everything we needs to know.
Wow.

Thank you so much, Moretta! Obsession is so interesting, but I do think it's overly lionised: to quote Aldous Huxley, "Single-mindedness is all very well in cows or baboons; in an animal claiming to belong to the same species as Shakespeare it is simply disgraceful."
