The examples I gave are complex, and I agree that actually, a fourteen-year-old imagining hurting a teacher isn't necessarily a sign of true sadism (much as I don't think Draco's talk of Mudbloods dying at the same age is anything dreadful - I do consider Snape a sadist, though). Still, I don't think Harry is as lacking lower motives as you consider him. He wanted to punish Carrow, so he made him scream. Considering the attempted casting of Sectumsempra on Snape at the end of HBP, it's not even hugely out of character.
And I've already agreed that there is a difference between what Bellatrix does to Hermione and what Harry does to Carrow - and certainly it's not like torturing someone to madness. But yeah, under the same general category for certain.
