National Poetry Month: A Serious Person by Wendy Cope

And here we have a poem by my favourite poet of all time, Wendy Cope. It’s hard to get her stuff on the net (because her copyright’s still active – I encourage all of you to buy her stuff, though! And I think this might come under educational/personal use!) and she deserves promotion. Also, I like to share funny stuff with you guys.

A Serious Person by Wendy Cope

joomla visitor

I can tell you're a serious person
And I know from the way you talk
That what goes on inside your head
Is pure as the whitest chalk.

It's nice to meet serious people
And hear them explain their views:
Your concern for the rights of women
Is especially welcome news.

I'm sure you'd never exploit one;
I expect you'd rather be dead;
I'm thoroughly convinced of it -
Now can we go to bed?

LOL. Once again, my love of the last (punch) line rears its ugly head. This is so very Wendy Cope: her funny take on love and sex is one of my favourite things about her. She is also very funny and true-to-life on certain things any middle-class, educated woman will meet at some point in her life. For instance, conversation from nice liberal men that makes them roll their eyes and think, “yes, but I can has sex nao?”

I <3 Wendy Cope so hard. I think my favourite is her unusual cat poem, although the one about not eating owls wins extra points for managing to offend the people who commissioned it :-D

AHAHAHA, I'd forgotten the owl poem!

The cat one is lots of fun! Although I think my favourite is that one called 'Boring Men' or whatever, about men having 'boring arguments'? Although I can totally be like the men in that poem.
